Westminster Abbey and Horizon 22, weekend of 2&3 March 2024
I have not visited Westminster Abbey for probably 40 or more years - I would pop in when I was a lad and after a culture or history boost, but not since and certainly not since an entrance charge has been in existence, so Jenny and I took the opportunity this weekend.
A more recent attraction to the City has been the Horizon 22 viewing platform in 22 Bishopsgate. It is higher than the Shard (by 10m), and there is no booking fee - you just have to book a time slot for your visit.
We booked some accommodation and combined the two.
On the wet Saturday, we got a train to Victoria and had some breakfast opposite the station and took my beloved 24 bus down Victoria Street to Westminster Abbey. A 2for1 voucher courtesy of National Rail gave us entrance for £29.
The rain seemed to lessen the tourist numbers, but there still seemed a lot of people in the Abbey.
The Abbey is great - there is so much to see - but it is so much more "cluttered" than I recalled. There are over 600 monuments and commemorations to the Great and Good of the last thousand years as well as breathtaking architecture. It is a beautiful site.
After a couple of hours, Jenny and I strolled the 20 or so minutes through St. James' Park to Piccadilly Circus and then to the Underground to Tower Hill to check in to the Premier Inn near Tower Hill.
Dinner, rest and breakfast were taken before the short walk through the City streets to Bishopsgate and Horizon 22.
A fast lift to the 58th floor took us to the Viewing Platform. Luckily, the mist that had been around the last few mornings was not in evidence and the views were fabulous.
This was a very enjoyable weekend
